Buyatab began with an idea and a dedication to solve a real-life problem. Here we are today ten years later, partnered with many of the world’s most iconic brands, have an amazing team of over 65 committed individuals, and one step closer to achieving our shared vision.
Today we find ourselves in an extremely fortunate position. Our goal has always been to be the leading solution for digital gift cards. With our recent partnership with the world’s leading stored value provider, we are positioned to exceed our original plans.
Over the past ten years, Buyatab as a company, has helped transform the gift card industry with our innovative approach and technology. Along the way, we were fortunate to have made countless memories that illustrate Buyatab’s current success. As we reflect on this amazing ten-year journey, here are ten key memories that have brought us to today:
1. Day one
Buyatab was officially incorporated in 2009 while I was still in University. My goal was to build something that had the potential to change the way brands interact with their customers and with a lot of hard work, I think we can say we did that and still continue to do so.
2. Onboarded first regional customer
From day one, we hit the ground running. We reached out to several local restaurants and retailers and in doing so, landed Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse in British Columbia, Canada. Small restaurant chains like this led to bigger opportunities.
3. Gained resources
Growing the number of partnerships with local companies gave us the opportunity to put our technology in front of angel investors. With an increase in funds dedicated to growth and development, we had our sights on something bigger.
4. Going into the U.S.
Buyatab continued to grow in Canada but in order to penetrate the industry and begin to make the impact we wanted, we had to expand our market. We were met with great opportunities and quickly partnered with many great brands in the U.S.
5. Influx of key team members
As Buyatab continued to grow, we added team members which many, to this day, are still here. We are extremely fortunate for the team members that have joined us on this amazing journey, including Draper our Chief Barking Officer. Without question, Buyatab and the gift card industry would not be where we are today without their contributions.
6. Industry recognition
In 2014, Buyatab began to receive industry recognition for its technology, and more recently, its rapid growth. We are honoured and humbled to have been the recipient of many prestigious awards that could not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our growing team.
7. Local & community recognition
In 2015, we started getting recognized in the local technology community. It’s exciting to be a part of an ecosystem that’s been built around innovation and it’s rewarding to be recognized alongside so many inspirational and talented peers.
8. Moving into an over 10,000 sq. ft. office
Our family grew quickly, and it was time for a new space! Equipped with standing desks, 5 conference rooms (we only had one previously), a foosball table and a Ping-Pong table, we are proud and happy to call this new office our home away from home.
9. AWS migration
In 2018, we migrated to the cloud and have never looked back! Our leading use of cloud infrastructure elevated us to a level of scale we always planned on achieving.
10. The acquisition
